Employee Training

Is your company providing enough training to your employees?  The benefits to training is more than just increased productivity.  Here's the top ten reasons why you should ramp up your training efforts today:

  • Employees who receive frequent training are less likely to find work elsewhere, thereby reducing your recruitment costs.

  • Trained employees can move faster up the ranks of your organization, making it easier to position new managers and supervisors.

  • Technology is always changing, giving us new ways to be efficient.  Without proper training you cannot expect your staff to keep up with the times.

  • Risks such as sexual harassment, violence, and discrimination can be reduced through proper, frequent training.

  • Cross-training will reduce downtime in the event a key employee is sick or on vacation.

  • Training will increase job satisfaction and morale, which leads to diminished churn, fewer absences, and better customer service.

  • A well-trained workforce can close more deals and help the business grow its market share.

  • Training for safety will help your employees avoid illnesses and injuries, not to mention avoiding regulatory fines and high insurance premiums.

  • Your customers will appreciate a well-trained employee who can answer their questions, and happier customers leads to referrals and more business.

  • Depending on the size of your business and your industry, it's required for Cal/OSHA compliance.

To make sure you're getting the most from your training investment, always be reassessing your efforts to make sure you're doing the right thing.  Be sure to keep classes interesting and pertinent to their jobs.   And finally, always provide employees with review materials that are clear and concise.

News Briefs

Job Cuts in US Fall to Lowest in 6 Years
Job cuts disclosed by US employers fell 64 percent in the 12 months ended in July, to their lowest in six years, as companies were reluctant to fire workers with unemployment at its lowest since 2001.  (Boston Globe)

Bill's Supporters Seeking State-Run Health Insurance
The measure establishes a system that, in theory, would be funded by payroll taxes on businesses of 8 percent and individual income taxes of 3 percent. But SB 840 would not actually allocate funding for the new program, and the single-payer approach could not go into effect until either voters or the Legislature approved the costs separately. (Sacramento Bee)

Pensions Take Their Lumps
Most people who take lump-sum distributions from their defined-benefit pension plans will get slightly less starting in 2008, thanks to a provision in the pension bill awaiting President Bush's signature. This provision applies only to lump-sum distributions from traditional defined-benefit plans. It has no impact on 401(k) and other defined-contribution plans. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Central Valley City Makes ‘Top 10’ Foreclosure List
Increasing foreclosure activity in the second quarter saw the Central Valley port city of Stockton ranked eighth in the nation for the percentage of households in some aspect of losing their home through foreclosure. (Central Valley Business Times)
